Transtheoretical Model Analysis
Thesis
Several authors have expressed their thoughts on the stages of the change model; however, the article focuses on the following key points. The article provides an understanding of the model, which is portrayed as flawed, and various arguments for why it should be abandoned are established. Similarly, the article explains the model’s popularity in the research literature. Furthermore, the article describes and questions the model’s scientific merits.
Rationale
Authors must express their thoughts on the model’s efficacy. According to Littell and Girvin (2002), the stages of change model has never specified how much time people spend in the first three stages. Instead, the concept encompasses a combination of a person’s intention to change, current behaviour, previous quit attempts, and duration to abstain. Similarly, the evidence presented shows little progress throughout the entire stage. A person, in their opinion, is unlikely to agree that the stages reflect reality. When an individual with different traits is classified in the same category, the stages of change model makes little sense. For example, grouping people with different levels of dependence or who have never attempted to quit smoking with those who have abstained for a long time. Finally, the model does not outline or consider the primary determinants of smoking. Furthermore, people’s dependency levels and withdrawal symptoms are not considered.
According to Segan et al. (2004), the model’s main purpose is to describe the relationship between variables. The description will outline exact stages and self-change strategies in sequential patterns. As a result, the model must do what is required at the appropriate time. According to the author, the model does not convincingly depict the idea of using distinct strategies to progress through distinct stages (Herzog et al., 1999). Dijkstra et al. (1998) supported it by stating that the idea of stage mismatch interventions being more effective than stage match interventions calls into question the model’s fundamental tenets.
