Integration of Theory, Research, and Practice in Nursing

Introduction
I have been a nurse for over eight years. With great pride, I rejoin the NOVA family after completing my bachelor’s degree at this beautiful institution. I am currently pursuing my master’s degree while enrolled in an acute care program that I hope to complete successfully. Taking pathophysiology and research online is challenging, especially since this is my first time attending an online school. However, I am excited to learn and see what this program offers for my professional development as a nurse. I enjoy gardening, cooking, and staying physically active. As a nurse practitioner, I would like to work in a specialized setting, such as a hospital with a cardiothoracic or pulmonary group. I know it will not be easy, but doing my best is the least I can do. Finally, advocating for my patients keeps me motivated as a nurse. My drive and motivation in this career are to be a voice for someone who cannot speak for themselves (incredibly when critically ill).

Theory, research, and practice are all intertwined. Nurses can apply and investigate theoretical work principles to help them advance in their careers. One principle cannot exist in isolation from the other. “While there is a multifaceted approach to connecting academia and practice, innovation is also required to expand, deepen, and sustain these connections” (Senelgrove & Wood, 2022, p. 75). A theory is required for research to prove that theory and put it in context for others to appreciate and rely on. This is especially evident in evidence-based practice research, where countless tools have evolved due to extensive research and efforts to uncover the best approaches to better health.

Integration of Theory, Research, and Practice in Nursing

When theory and research are combined in nursing, they form an advanced practice methodology. To improve patient outcomes and provide high-quality care, the Nurse Practitioner can use research tools that reflect evidence-based practice. According to the cited article, “a nurse’s journey with research as practice relevant knowledge begins in their nursing education programs” (Mitchell & Pereira-Edwards, 2022, p. 35). This is because the school system that educates nurses for career advancement must focus on conditioning the ARNP to incorporate theory and research work into daily practices, which aids in extending well-documented teaching to patients and families.
