The Role of HR in Developing HR-Mindedness-Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM)
The Society for Human Resource Management is a global professional membership association for human resource professionals which was found in 1948 and with its headquarters in Alexandra, Virginia. The organization has grown from starting as a voluntary group and developing to a fully registered organization to promote the success of human resource professionals. This is through the provision of resources like certification, networking through spearheading conferences, education, and training. SHRM also takes part in lobbying Congress on matters relating to labor-management (Fazey, 2020).
The education aspect that SHRM offers is through multiple ways. It takes part in research and publications where the data is made available to its members through its website. Furthermore, the website has vast informative resources like legislative updates, news, books, employment opportunities, HR policy among others. Similarly, SHRM offers annual national conferences that involve highly skilled speakers who share valuable information with the attending members (Chun and Evans, 2013). This information is vital in the personal development and engagement of the members in getting current trends in the field of HR. Not only do the conferences offer a platform for educational gain but also intra-professional networking which offers career growth opportunities.
Other than conducting annual conferences, the association promotes continuous skill development through the financial support of HR-related conferences and lunch meetings, be it small, local, or regional. This is done through its state-affiliated chapters. In these meetings invited experts to help attending members understand different aspects of HR by addressing them based on members’ interests and concerns. In the process, members get the social impact of shared experiences and in the long run relieve any work-related stress. The current activity of SHRM of increased legislative recommendations and development of industry standards has greatly impacted the roles and duties of HR professionals and their work environments (Brown, 2018). This has helped them attain confidence in the association as well as consider the protection of being members.
