The Importance of Academic Honor Code Compliance for Students Pursuing a Nursing Career
In terms of the definition of honor, one must understand that to receive the honor; one must act honorably. The term honor derives from the Old French terms “our” and “honor.” Onur, as a noun, means “glory, renown, fame earned,” whereas the verb honored means “to do honor to, show respect to” (Harper). Clinging to what is right is a sign of honor. Honour is a symbolic link between an individual and a set of morals. It is an individual’s character that emerges from both social teachings and personal ethics. According to the dictionary, honor manifests itself through adherence to a code of conduct and is associated with several qualities such as honesty, respect, and integrity (Merriam-Webster). The general definition of honor is to act justly and obediently to a set of guidelines or expectations.
A compilation of required behaviour is structured within educational institutions for a mutual foundation in conduct. According to the Honor Code Policy and Procedures (Baylor University), “Baylor University students, staff, and faculty shall act in academic matters with the utmost honesty and integrity,” according to the Honor Code Policy and Procedures (Baylor University). An honour code is a method of systematically and philosophically managing various endeavours based on honesty, trust, and honour. Academically, an honour code functions as ethical principles within a set of rules to guide an educational community from an ideal standpoint that defines acceptable and honourable behaviour within its community. Because it applies to everyone, the honour code is heavily based on the “idea that people can be trusted to act honourably” (Educalingo). An academic honour code fosters trust by relying on each individual to follow the rules and regulations without constant supervision.
Using an honour code creates dependability and builds trust. An academic honour code aims to give students complete independence while ensuring the integrity of completed work. Honour codes play an important role in education because they instil responsibility and growth in students, teaching them always to do what is right while also learning to respect and function well under authoritative guidelines. The honour code presents personal responsibility to students at the collegiate level and can aid in strengthening one’s integrity. Academic integrity has the value of paving the way to honour by gaining the trust of others. Furthermore, academic integrity contributes to an individual’s desired degree. In the eyes of employers, it is preferable to acquire graduates with reputable personal integrity.
