The Electronic Health Record (EHR)

ANSWER

Considering How Technology Affects Healthcare Choices
Healthcare Technology Use
The Electronic Health Record (EHR) system is among the most influential technology I have encountered in the healthcare industry. EHRs act as consolidated online databases for patient data, such as prescription records, imaging, test results, and medical histories. EHR systems let healthcare teams communicate more effectively, access data more easily, and make better decisions.

EHR’s Effect on Healthcare
The delivery of healthcare has changed as a result of the use of EHR systems. According to research, electronic health records (EHRs) greatly improve patient safety by lowering prescription errors, facilitating data-driven clinical decisions, and enhancing care coordination (Balestra, 2017). Additionally, by giving various healthcare practitioners involved in a patient’s treatment real-time access to data, EHR systems support continuity of care.

EHR Utilization to Assist in a Medical Decision
I supported patient care decisions with the EHR system during a recent clinical rotation. A patient with a long medical history presented with sudden chest pain. I looked at previous ECGs, test findings, and prescription records by logging into the EHR. With the use of this thorough information, the team was able to promptly rule out myocardial infarction and concentrate on other possible diagnosis, such anxiety or acid reflux.

An EHR Decision-Making Example
A pharmaceutical reconciliation procedure served as one particular example of how to use an EHR. The patient’s stated prescriptions and the doctor’s recorded orders were found to be different. We found the inaccuracy and avoided a possible negative drug interaction by using the EHR’s medication history feature. Here is an example of how EHR systems guarantee rapid, safe, and accurate decision-making.

EHR Technology Development Using the Technology Life Cycle
History: In the 1960s, EHR systems were first implemented as simple databases in big hospitals and educational institutions. Early iterations could only store diagnostic and demographic data and lacked interoperability.

Present: Cloud-based storage, decision-support tools, and artificial intelligence algorithms are all features of contemporary EHR systems, which are integrated, user-friendly platforms. Improvements in interoperability have made it possible for facilities to exchange data easily.

Future: Predictive analytics, machine learning, and improved patient interaction tools like patient portals are all key components of EHR systems’ future. With these advancements, EHRs should become more proactive in detecting health hazards and enhancing the standard of treatment.

Enhancements in the Making of Healthcare Decisions
Healthcare decision-making has been greatly enhanced by the development of EHR systems. While modern EHRs incorporate clinical decision-support tools to enable evidence-based care, early systems largely served as data stores. Preventive interventions are made possible by predictive analytics capabilities that foresee patient outcomes. Artificial intelligence and other future developments will significantly improve decision-making by offering real-time risk assessments and treatment suggestions.
