Ethical practice, accountability, and respect are the key driving force to a successful nursing career. Every student should think beyond just graduating from an accredited program and demonstrating admirable clinical skills. It is paramount for everyone in the healthcare field to demonstrate strong work ethic commitment, unique problem-solving skills, and strong interpersonal and teamwork skills. This is only achieved when introduced early in nursing school and associated with practice while demonstrating the importance of integrity and ethics. Integrity and ethics are significant, especially in online learning processes where many institutions have opted to take their classes for convenience (Devine and Chin, 2018). This paper aims at addressing the relationship between academic and professional integrity of nursing students and professionals as a strategy of academic success and professional development plan. In the process, the paper will demonstrate the link between academic integrity and writing and professional practice and scholarly articles. Furthermore, the paper will elaborate on how Grammarly, SafeAssign tools, and Paraphrasing help promote scholarly writing integrity. After that, the paper will discuss the key strategies that I intend to use to maintain work integrity as an MSN student and as a practicing nurse.
Section1: The connection between Academic and Professional Integrity
1. Academic integrity and writing
Professional writing is usually an integral part of learning and a demonstration of mastery of concepts in academia. As such, academic integrity is considered a pillar that each student needs to demonstrate before graduation. Academic integrity includes the act of being responsible and honest in academic writing with the submission of well researched and original work. This includes avoiding plagiarism by giving credit to scholarly work by referencing the original idea. Academic integrity in writing helps categorize the level of professionalism in a piece of work. It gives a reader a good perception of the author with the development of trust and fairness. It also determines the credibility of the work and helps in clearly demonstrating gaps available from the original idea. Academic integrity helps writers adhere to a particular profession’s rules, making it easier to share ideas among each member of the profession and develop the creativity that can be supported globally. In the long run, the author develops an admirable discipline and personality that helps him/her attain academic knowledge and share information. All this contributes to improvement in the quality of care and professional growth (Shepherd, 2017).
2. Professional Practice and Scholarly Ethics
Professional practice is best defines as a set of guidelines that demonstrate acceptable behavior of skilled personnel in a particular field as they conduct their day to day activities. However, scholarly ethics includes moral and academic integrity revolving around research and academic engagements, i.e., course work and examinations (Shepherd, 2017). Scholarly ethics play a vital role in shaping individuals’ professional practice. This is so because knowledge acquisition determines the eventual effectiveness and code of conduct during practice; similarly, the quality of care and patient satisfaction are all determined by the degree of professional practice learned in institutions. Scholarly ethics instill honesty, integrity, credibility, teamwork (acknowledging other people’s work), and time management. All these skills are essential during practice. Similarly, scholarly ethics help instill knowledge that is necessary for Evidence-Based Practice as a nurse. A person with strong scholarly ethics is always confident and creative in all their obligation, which in turn helps build admirable professional practice (Bromley, 2015).
3. Grammarly, SafeAssign, and Paraphrasing as critical promoters of Academic Integrity
Without a doubt, making errors in academic writing can occur at any particular time, especially with the current era of an increased level of publications and scientific research. However, some essential online resources have been developed to help authors ensure their work’s originality before the completion of their work. Some of these resources include Grammarly and Safe Assign. Similarly, paraphrasing is a crucial tool that requires practice and mastery when getting information from other sources (Keener et al., 2019). Grammarly is an essential online tool that helps eliminate grammatical errors like spellings, punctuation, the improper use of articles and sentence structures, misused words, and typos. The output is not only impressive to the reader but also readable and easy to comprehend. SafeAssign tool is vital in checking for potential plagiarism even with paraphrased work. As a result, the sentences detected as plagiarized can be paraphrased or quoted with citations. The overall output of paraphrasing Grammarly and SafeAssign is improved quality of work, originality, and ultimate mastery of academic integrity.
Section 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work
1. Work Integrity and ethics as an MSN program Student
The existing cluster of activities online and physically affects personal preparedness, which puts academic integrity at the test. As a student of an online MSN program, I intend on putting priorities on studying and excelling in my studies through the use of time management and website blocker tools as well as prepare on time while using all available resources to attain necessary skills needed in conducting the tasks at hand be it coursework or exams. Academic integrity is well mastered when learned as an apprenticeship. Therefore, I plan to utilize my lecturers and mentors in developing academic mastery skills with the willingness to correct any errors I make. Similarly, I acknowledge others’ work by including referencing in my work and always utilizing anti-plagiarism tools. I plan to reduce the dependence on academic integrity tools by continuously practicing correct writing skills like paraphrasing, correct grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure, focusing on improving my work’s overall quality and standards as a nursing student.
2. Work integrity and ethics as a Professional Nurse
Continuous delivery of quality and acceptable healthcare services requires continuous learning pf healthcare professionals. The rapid scientific research globally has helped identify relevant interventions that reduce clinical problems and promote patient satisfaction (Arreciado Maranon and Isla 2015). As a result, I plan to advance my career with enhanced utilization of evidence-based practice continuously. The significance of this is the improvement of competency and integrity and direct contribution to the field of healthcare. Similarly, I plan always to observe existing patient support and institutional policies and act as an advocate for change in the healthcare profession. I purpose to always adhere to professional codes of conduct, no matter the environment or circumstance at hand.
3. A Review of Resources and Approaches I intend to utilize as an MSN student and Professional Nurse.
The readily available resources that I intend to use include library materials, coursework, online databases, references to past papers, academic projects, and other students. I also plan to work closely with my mentors and network with practicing nurses to learn directly from them. I intend to subscribe to professional bodies that will help me quickly get resources, attend relevant conferences to learn, network, and improve my professional integrity levels. Online resources are quite vital in the current age. I will use them in attending webinars, enrolling for professional training as well as communicating with nurses well established in their specialty.
