Significance of Statistics in Health Care
Statistics, in general, can be defined as the discipline that comprises the collection, organization, interpretation, and presentation of data (Theroux, 2017). During the application of statistics to a scientific society and an industrial problem, it is a requirement to commence with a statistical model to be studied. Populations (especially in health) can be a diverse group of people. The statistical aspect deals with every aspect of data, including data planning (Monleon-Getino, 2017).
Medical statistics is defined as applying statistics to medicine and the health sciences, forensic medicine, and clinical research (Singh, 2017). Statistics is, with respect provided above, generally defined as quantitative data and the classification of this type of data, in relevance with the probability of theory and the application to means such as testing hypothesis. Statistics in healthcare comprise empirical data and estimations directly related to healthcare, such as mortality, morbidity, risk factors, health services coverage, and health systems (Monleon-Getino, 2017).
For many healthcare practitioners, healthcare practitioners may seem to have little connection with patient care issues and concerns (Theroux, 2017). Statistics in healthcare are vital in identifying effective treatments and understanding the overall health of a population as healthcare emphasizes research-based practice by using treatments that have been deemed to be effective using empirical evidence (Theroux, 2017). Therefore, health care statistics are important to be understood by practitioners to make sense of research studies (Monleon-Getino, 2017).
This knowledge assists medical professionals in evaluating studies that help in the assessment of treatment efficacy and interventions. It further assists medical practitioners to make decisions by themselves, conducting research on their own, leading to enormous benefits to patient care (Theroux, 2017). Besides providing scientific evidence that supports knowledge and innovation in medicine, healthcare statistics convey valuable information concerning society’s health. Diverse sources have proved that statistics enable medical professionals and public health officials to gauge healthcare disparities among different members of a population (Singh, 2017).
Health promotion’s primary definition is a behavioral, social science that draws its concepts from biological, environmental, psychological, and physical sciences to champion health and assists in disease prevention. This is also in conjunction with disability prevention through voluntary behavior change and is education-driven (Singh, 2017). Health promotion activities in communities a special group is mainly driven by medical statistics of the particular group (Theroux, 2017). For instance, a particular group of people who smoke a lot may be advised accordingly using mortality statistics caused due to smoking (Monleon-Getino, 2017).
In my specialty, Medical surgery nursing, which is a specialty that adopts the usage of manual operative instrumental techniques on an individual to investigate or treat a pathological condition such as disease or injury in the improvement of bodily function. Before undertaking a medical operation, the medical practitioner needs to be aware of certain facts and figures, including blood pressure, temperature, heartbeat, and respiratory rate (Singh, 2017). These are important in determining whether a patient can be operated on or not. Statistical knowledge is useful in determining whether certain treatments are necessary. They are vital in further understanding of the patient’s condition (Monleon-Getino, 2017). High blood pressure may be indicative of cardiovascular disease (Theroux, 2017).
