Spirituality In Nursing

ANSWER

Spiritual well-being has a significant impact on an individual’s health and well-being. While providing spiritual care and assessing spiritual needs is an important part of the nurse’s job, research suggests that nurses do not always provide spiritual care to their patients or assess their spiritual needs. This review seeks to identify broader reasons for nurses’ inconsistent spiritual care delivery to their patients.

Methods:

A review of the literature was conducted to identify instruments available for spiritual care and assessment by nursing professionals.

Results:

14 spiritual care and assessment measures were identified, covering the key domains of ‘beliefs, values, and attitudes toward spiritual care,’ ‘Respondents’ frequency of provision or extent to which they provide spiritual care or willingness,’ ‘Ability to respond to spiritual pain,’ and ‘Multiple Domains: beliefs and attitudes toward spirituality and spiritual care, amount of preparation, training, and knowledge, spiritual care practices, perceived ability and comfort with provision, and perceived barriers to provision.’

Conclusions:

A lack of standardization in the conceptualization and assessment of spiritual care makes reviewing difficult, but several themes emerge. In general, students and qualified nurses recognize the importance of spiritual care but are hampered by a lack of knowledge about how to best implement it. Individual nurses’ or training institutions’ religiosity appears to be less important than training in spiritual care interventions.
