Self- care Deficit Theory
In modern health care, nursing philosophies help nurses by proposing different approaches that provide better care. I chose to watch the video on self-care deficit philosophy by Dorothea Orem because it concentrates on circumstances where a person is incapable of performing continuous self-care. Each person should initiate and perform their care regularly to maximize their health. Nurses should fill-in the gaps of care by assisting the individuals when they cannot provide self-care (Tk & Chandran, 2017).
In my philosophy, I agree with Orem that nursing is a form of action. Nursing should not be a proactive but a reactive measure. People should be responsible for their personal care instead of relying on nursing. However, nurses should intervene in patient’s care when it is beyond the patient’s capability. Caregivers should take action for the sake of the patient’s health. Another assumption that I agree with this theory is that awareness of potential health problems can promote self-care habits. If patients know about risks concerning their health, they can adopt ways to prevent further complications. One thing that surprised me in this video is Orem’s opinion on why people need nursing. According to her, people require nursing only when they are unable to provide for themselves. The reason this idea surprised me is the limited acknowledgment of a person’s emotional needs. Individuals with an emotional deficit that prevents effective self-care can prevent them from receiving the primary care they need (Tk & Chandran, 2017).
I would recommend this video to another student because this theory helps nurses comprehend their patients better. By teaching nurses the importance of implementing self-care, it becomes possible to treat illnesses more effectively for better overall health. I received the value from watching this video that nursing should be viewed as a motive thought. Caring for patients who can no longer care for themselves should motivate health care providers. From the viewpoint of practice and education, nurses should pull themselves away from viewing nursing as an obligation to healthcare systems (Tk & Chandran, 2017).
