ANSWER
Individual and group psychotherapies for substance use disorders (SUDs) that have shown efficacy in clinical trials are reviewed, as are widely used psychotherapeutic interventions, such as addiction counseling, that have not been well tested in clinical trials.
Along with CBT for SUDs, several psychotherapies combine CBT-based principles and techniques with other components to address a broader range of issues in recovery. Behavioral Couples Therapy was created to treat SUD patients in collaboration with committed partners who do not use drugs or alcohol. Twelve-step facilitation and other similar interventions are intended to encourage patients to start and stay involved in mutual-help groups. Behavioral medical management includes monitoring medication compliance and side effects, as well as brief counseling on how to reduce substance use and encouragement to attend community mutual-help groups.
SUD psychotherapies are discussed in this article. Other psychosocial interventions for SUDs, such as screening and brief intervention, mutual help groups, physician health programs, integrated therapies for dual diagnoses, and models for improving SUD care delivery, such as continuing care, are discussed separately.
