The Future Vision and Goals of Family Nurse Practitioner and Its Relation to Emerging Healthcare Trends and Needs
A family nurse practitioner is entrusted to deliver quality, safe and cost-effective care to individuals, families, and groups. The future vision is to provide patient-centered, holistic, and culturally sensitive care that will meet the needs of patients. The aim of providing patient-centered and holistic care is to improve health outcomes of individuals and populations, reduce health care costs and improve the health status of all while reducing the current health disparities. The envisioned future will be characterized by increased patient empowerment through support and education to facilitate healthy lifestyles to reduce preventable diseases by reducing health risks. Disease prevention will facilitate the achievement of better health outcomes and a reduction in health care costs.
Emerging healthcare trends and needs include demographic changes and technological advancement in healthcare. The population is becoming more diverse with an increase in older adults. It is estimated that by 2029, the country will have a 73% increase in older adults above the age of 65 years (Haddad et al., 2020). The need for health care will increase, especially in long-term care. As a nurse practitioner, quality and safe care will be critical to improving health outcomes for the population. The population is expected to be more diverse, with projections indicating that by 2044 the minority populations will account for half of the population in the United States, and by 2060, one in every five people will be foreign-born (Baciu, et al., 2017). To address health disparities and improve health outcomes, patient-centered and culturally sensitive care will be crucial. Care will become more centered on prevention and health education to ensure that patients take an active role in their care.
Technological advancement has affected and will continue affecting the role of advanced nurses. Increased application of technology into care delivery has improved access to care and collaboration among health care providers. The use of telehealth is one example of how technology has improved care. As a family nurse practitioner, one can monitor patients remotely with physical interaction. Patients receive timely care as one can monitor their vitals and recommend interventions preventing complications and unnecessary visits to the emergency rooms. Reports indicate that facilities with telehealth have a patient to nurse ratio of 15:1 compared to 11:1 for facilities not utilizing telehealth (Bashir & Bastola, 2018). With such advancement in technology, the vision and goal of providing quality and safe care will be achieved with ease.
Change Management Strategies to be Understood to Promote Appropriate Change Management and Response to the Rapidly Evolving Healthcare System
The healthcare system is involving rapidly, and healthcare providers require to utilize effective strategies to manage change. Some of the strategies that advanced nurses need to understand include effective communication, patient-provider relationship, research, use of technology, and collaboration. Effective communication is crucial in interaction with patients and other care providers. Effective communication facilitates collaboration and the establishment of a proper relationship with patients and other health care providers. Changes in healthcare have necessitated collaboration and teamwork for quality, especially in managing chronic illnesses. Advanced should understand the foundation of effective communication and collaboration with other healthcare providers, patients, their families, and the community as a whole. According to Morley and Cashell (2017), collaborative practice is characterized by coordination, valuing and understanding the contributions of others, shared decision making, and respectful relations based on mutual understanding. Such foundations should be well understood by advanced practice nurses.
Research facilitates the delivery of quality care through evidence-based practice. Advanced practice nurses should be familiar with processes and protocols to be followed while carrying out research in their practice setting to improve care. They should also understand the need for information technology in care delivery and acquire the necessary skills. Technology has become essential in communication, patient education, patient monitoring, sharing of information between health care providers, and administering care. It empowers providers to educate, monitor, collect data, follow-up, and provide multi-disciplinary care (Bashir & Bastola, 2018).
