Intentional violence is defined as interpersonal harm directed towards self or others that leads to intentional injuries (“Intentional injury | Division of disease prevention | MeCDC | Maine DHHS,” n.d.).
Injuries affect the quality of life as they lead to death and other medical complications for individuals. In the United States, citizens of ages 15-34 are found as most victims of death due to intentional violence.
Types of Intentional Injuries
Interpersonal injuries include Suicide, Homicide, Domestic violence, Sexual Assault or Rape, and Youth violence (“Intentional injuries,” 2017). All these injuries can be prevented even before they occur, and the quality of life improved.
Models of Care
CDC uses the Public Health Approach, which includes: defining the problem, identifying risk factors, developing tests and prevention strategies then lastly, disseminating principles of sufficient interpersonal injury. Additionally, another model is a social-Ecological framework that helps interpersonal violence victims analyze them as individuals, their environment, and societal factors.
Impact of Substance Abuse
Substance Abuse has a diverse effect on individuals, families, and the community: it affects the quality of physical and mental health and reduces productivity, and creates unemployment. Additionally, substance abuse leads to the neglect of children. On a national level, it leads to increased violence and crime (“Key Substance Use and Mental Health Indicators in the United States: Results from the 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health,” 2019).
