African Americans and immigrants from Southern and Eastern Europe during 1880-1914

African Americans

African-Americans were subject to institutionalized racism and discrimination around the start of the twentieth century. Education, voting rights, and career prospects were denied to them. White nationalists often subjected them to assault and intimidation and compelled them to labor in low-paying occupations (Alridge, Randolph, & Johnson, 2023). The segregation of public areas and the advent of the Ku Klux Klan exacerbated Black Americans’ marginalization.

African-Americans had a variety of effects as a result of the Industrial Revolution. Although it produced new employment in the North, many African-Americans continued to endure workplace discrimination. In addition, the surge of European immigrants created conflicts between Black Americans and European immigrants since they fought for employment. The Progressives brought about some reforms for African Americans. For instance, the NAACP was created in 1909 to campaign for civil rights, and African American activists contested the Supreme Court’s ruling in Plessy v. Ferguson (1896). Nevertheless, the breadth of these initiatives was restricted, and they did not address the core causes of racism and prejudice.

Immigrants from Southern and Eastern Europe

Immigrants from southern and eastern Europe endured economic hardship and political upheaval in their native countries throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The prospect of improved economic possibilities drew them to the United States, but they encountered substantial obstacles in their new home. Many immigrants lived in congested tenements and performed hazardous, low-paying labor. They were exposed to prejudice from native-born Americans and xenophobic notions. In addition, many immigrants lacked English proficiency, which severely restricted their chances (OpenStax, 2019).

Significant effects of the Industrial Revolution were felt by immigrants from southern and eastern Europe. The expansion of factories and industries provided people with new employment options, but these positions were often hazardous and poorly compensated. In addition, because of competition from other immigrants and native-born Americans, many immigrants were forced to take these positions in order to make ends meet. The Progressives enacted certain improvements for southern and eastern European immigrants. Jane Addams’ Hull House settlement home, for instance, offered education and social services to newcomers. In addition, the National Origins Act of 1924 curtailed immigration from Southern and Eastern Europe, reducing employment rivalry (OpenStax, 2019). In addition, this behavior reinforced racist prejudices and further disenfranchised immigrants from these areas.
