Evaluative Essay Planning Template

PART I

This image is only synonymous to science fiction movies, largely surreal. This site for most New Yorkers has been brought an extra heartache as the city was mentioned as one of the global hotspots and The United States epicenter of the Corona virus. New York was known as the city that never sleeps, but it did eventually not for weeks but for many months. As the city went on lockdown as from March, it saw a stillness that was never seen before. Empty streets, empty tunnels, nothing and no one. The city has an idiosyncratic character just as a river, always running with high energy and motion.
This sight doesn’t really make sense. The city will definitely bounce back, hopefully vibrant than ever. But what does this say about the inevitability of our lives, and our purpose in it. If everything were to stop suddenly, does it make sense. The potential reader to my seemingly insignificant piece is an individual searching for meaning, an identity or a purpose in his being. This comes at a cost of self-evaluation, Is it all worth it ? what’s my worth? what’s the worth of lifework? , is it meaningful? What if everything were to stop to right here right now? An empty New York? only in the movies.
Part II
An empty New York calls for close retrospection. Just like a river a roaring river (with sharks and other reptilian aquatic animals) how does it come to be so obsolete, so empty so dry. Just as the aquatic ecosystem of plenty organisms representing their way of life and a kind of culture, a tradition, what happens when this river dries up all of a sudden. Do we see the signs of impending drought? The reader must try to identify himself/herself with the uncertainties of life, that nothing can be too predictable, dependable, nothing is worth getting used to aside from one’s true source of happiness, joy or fulfilment.
Part III
The picture of an empty New York does not beg for further lighter evaluation. It is open and speaks by itself. In a long time there has not been one instance that this city has been seen this desolate, empty somewhat abandoned. The siting is in itself a mystery of every heathy orchard turning barren and with its trees bare and unproductive OR rather a roaring river (as explained above) losing its drive.
The reader must understand that the image is just but a symbol of deeper reflection of one’s life meaning. Looking at the picture, the reader should ask themselves, what if it were the end, what if New York were to be swept away by a vicious current, what if it were the end of the world, would it still make sense?

PART IV
In the wake of soaring rates of mental health cases, lots of individuals are seeking meaning to their lives. The meaning of life has changed immensely. Many people are stuck on crossroads, on what direction to choose in the pursuit of happiness. In this millee of activities we are caught up in a rat race of survival. This is the ethos of the image. The logos of this image is the empty streets of New York. Never seen empty. The pathos of the image is the emptiness of our lives and its meaning.

Instructions
This week, you will be working on the evaluative essay by deliberating over topics, discovering a purpose, generating criteria for evaluation, and considering persuasive appeals in your subject and in your writing. The purpose of this assignment is to set you up with your blueprint while you prepare for the final evaluative essay that you will submit in Week 8.

After reading the lesson and the textbook reading for this week, complete the following:

Look over your discussion work for Week 7 to determine which of your ideas interests you the most and which you believe would engage a reader the most.
Think about your criteria for evaluation and put careful thought into choosing two or three.
Address persuasion in two ways. Look at your image and assess how the creator of the image uses logos, ethos, and pathos to influence the viewer. Also, as you think about your criteria and how you will support those, consider how you will also use logos, ethos, and pathos to assert your overall evaluation of your image.
Once you do this, you will be ready to begin the formal planning stage.

Access the Evaluative Essay Planning Template (in Required Resources). Use this template and follow the format provided to create your prewriting and planning work this week. You will need to do the following:

Identify your image and explain why you chose this image and why it will be important to your reader.
Describe your overall purpose for writing about this image. What will you attempt to prove?
List your 2-3 criteria for evaluation, and for each of those criteria, provide two specific pieces of support.
Note at least one use in the image of logos, one of pathos, and one of ethos.
Note at least one way in which you, in your writing, will appeal to your reader by using logos, pathos, and ethos.
