Cultural Competency & Research Analysis Discussion
Question Description
Case Study 3:
Lucia, Elena, and Dr. Bhandari
Hannah, the school counselor at Cargill Academy, volunteers for Habitat for Humanity. There she met Lucia, age 32, and her husband Martin, who are also volunteers. Hannah and Lucia have become friends.
Lucia’s grandmother Elena had come to live with Lucia and Martin about five years before, when Elena’s husband died. Lucia has expressed concern to Hannah about Elena having gotten lost coming home from the daily walks to the park that she so enjoyed. On one occasion, Martin and Lucia had gone to look for Elena and found her two miles away walking in the grocery store parking lot. On another occasion, the police had found Elena wandering and had asked around to find out where Elena lived. Lucia and Martin were alarmed when the police brought her home. They are concerned about the possibility of Alzheimer’s disease and are afraid to leave Elena home alone.Cultural Competency & Research Analysis Discussion
Hannah referred Lucia to Dr. Bhandari, a specialist in aging and memory.
Once Elena learned her granddaughter was planning to take her to the doctor, she was very upset because she hadn’t been consulted first. Also, Elena didn’t have any bothersome symptoms and decided there was no reason a doctor needed to see her. She felt that all she needed was more sleep.
Lucia and Elena arrived at the doctor’s office and the nurse brought them back to the examination room. Elena was displeased, but allowed the nurse to take her weight, pulse, and blood pressure. Once the nurse was finished, she left the room and Dr. Bhandari came in. When Dr. Bhandari realized that Elena did not understand much English, she turned and spoke directly to Lucia. Lucia struggled a bit in understanding what Dr. Bhandari was saying as she spoke with a thick Indian accent. She did understand enough to know that she wanted to order some tests for Elena. Neither of them explained the tests to Elena. Elena was furious and wanted to go home.
Consider the individual, family, cultural beliefs and expectations, and ethical issues the individuals must think about as the people in the case interact with each other. Consider the medical professionals’ roles with the patient.
This is the first component of your course project. For this assignment, you will demonstrate your ability to apply psychological principles and research findings to a situation related to culture, ethnicity, and diversity.
Note: In this assignment, you begin your project work on the case study that you chose in the Week 2 discussion. You will use this case throughout your course project.Cultural Competency & Research Analysis Discussion
INSTRUCTIONS
After completing the assignment preparation study in Week 2, write a 6–8-page paper in which you examine three main areas as they relate to the specific case you have selected:
Theory: Application of theory to the specific case.
Research: Understanding of research methods and application of findings.
Cultural Competence: Knowledge and application of cultural competency skills.
Theory
Select a minimum of two theories that are relevant to the case you chose. The theories should help explain concerns for the client, such as developmental or contextual issues. Analyze how those psychological theories point toward potential solutions for a problem.
Of the theories you select, make sure that at least one provides a framework for understanding the cultural issues between the individuals in the case.
Explain how these theories help us to understand the individual client or patient in the case and how they can direct the professionals in the case to a potential solution.
Note that theory can help us understand where the individual (client or patient) is in her development. For example, psychosocial theory would help explain individual development, or ecological systems theory would help explain the impact of environmental interaction on the individual.
Research
Select two original research studies that help us understand the situation in the case you selected and potentially lead to interventions in the case.
Cite the research studies, using APA style.
Explain the research design and methods used in the research studies. What type of research was conducted, who was studied, and how?
Describe the researchers’ findings.
Next, explain how the findings in the studies relate to the case you selected. How do these findings help us formulate a potential solution/intervention in the case?
Cultural Competency
Use a model of cultural competency to explain the competencies needed for working in a culturally diverse environment.
Apply those cultural competencies to assist the professional in the case to help resolve a particular culture-related issue.
Construct a plan to develop your own professional cultural sensitivity. (For this section you may write in first person).
Explain how the guidelines you developed for the professional will help guide you in your future work as a professional.
Discuss some steps you could take to further your own growth in cultural competencies.Cultural Competency & Research Analysis Discussion
Note: Be sure you review the scoring guide to understand how you will be graded. Work toward the distinguished level for each scoring guide criterion.
You can use the APA Paper Template to ensure that you are formatting your paper from title page through references page according to APA guidelines.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Your paper should meet the following requirements:
Written communication: Written communication is free from errors that detract from the overall message.
APA format: Comply with current APA Style and Format.
Number of resources: A minimum of five academic resources. Two of those must be original research studies. The other sources will support your basis in theory and cultural competency.
Length of paper: 6–8 typed, double-spaced pages, in addition to the title page and references page.
Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point.

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.
Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.
Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.
The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.
ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLASS
Discussion Questions (DQ)
Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words.
Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source.
One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words.
I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.
Weekly Participation
Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately.
In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.
Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).
Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.
APA Format and Writing Quality
Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).
Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.
I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.
Use of Direct Quotes
I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.
As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.
It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.
LopesWrite Policy
For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me.
Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.
Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own?
Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.
Late Policy
The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.
Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.
If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.
I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.
As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.
Communication
Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me:
Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class.
Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
