Summary
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and mindfulness-based therapies are the most effective models that have been found to work in treating offenders and inmates in correctional settings and reducing the rates of recidivism. According to Nwokeoma et al. (2019), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy helps the patient to master how to easily identify and change any disturbing and destructive thought patterns that may have a negative influence on the emotions and behavior. CBT, therefore, focuses on changing automatic negative thoughts in an individual, which can contribute to emotional difficulties, anxiety, and depression. Such negative thoughts can also have a negative effect on the mood and even significantly affect the actions that a given individual will takes (Nwokeoma et al., 2019). Through CBT, all negative disturbing or destructive thought patterns are identified, challenged, and effectively replaced with more positive, realistic, and objective thoughts. Among inmates, destructive thoughts can involve thoughts to commit crimes such as robbery or sexual offenses. CBT has therefore been found to be effective in the treatment of sexual offenders and greatly reducing the rates of recidivism after the release of such offenders (Nwokeoma et al., 2019).
Mindfulness-based strategies have also been found to be quite effective in the treatment of prisoners for anxiety, depression, and even for behavioral change (Yoon et al., 2017). Mindfulness-based strategies have normally followed the cognitive therapy framework but also included the cultivation of non-judgmental attitude, meditation, and present orientation (Yoon et al., 2017). Through mindfulness-based strategies, inmates are therefore taught how to begin a clean slate in their life and to effectively deal with their past. Mindfulness-based strategies are therefore effective in reducing recidivism among inmates after release (Yoon et al., 2017).
