Nurses are responsible for considering and meeting patients’ needs to the best of their abilities. As comprehensive healthcare providers, we must also address the client’s spiritual needs. Spirituality is an essential component of the overall treatment process, just like any other aspect. In this regard, measuring and assessing tools have been implemented to evaluate the validity and reliability of spiritual care as a concept of a dimension of human existence.

The first step in evaluating spiritual aspects in nursing is comprehending and categorizing this concept. Spirituality in medical settings can be broadly defined as four major themes to consider when dealing with patients:
religious systems of beliefs and values
life meaning, purpose, and connections with others
non-religious systems of beliefs and values
metaphysical or transcendental phenomena
In some cases, the concept of spirituality is not well defined, and nurses fail to provide adequate care in meeting the patient’s needs, so understanding this concept is critical in nursing practice.

Furthermore, spirituality is systematically used in health-related practices, following practical guidelines that can be explained in a case scenario. The Actioning Spirituality and Spiritual Care in Education Training (ASSET) model is one example of how spiritual care can be evaluated and thus put into action. This model provides a framework for assessing patients’ spiritual needs, and planning, implementing, and evaluating spiritual care. The increased awareness of the essence of spirituality among nurses directly enables them to provide holistic care. This is accomplished by incorporating it into the curriculum of university nurse programs. It can be taught using both traditional lecture methods and more comprehensive methods such as case studies, group discussions, and self-reflection exercises.

Such nursing education methods significantly increase nurses’ spirituality, spiritual well-being, and spiritual care competence, further improving patients’ holistic care by smoothly identifying and managing their needs. Because not all patients require the same spiritual care, the ASSET model is critical in practice for assessing and implementing various patient-specific treatments.
