One of the most important benefits of exercise is to ensure a properly functioning cardio respiratory system. Cardio respiratory refers to the transportation of oxygen from the lungs to the muscles. As we exercise, we don’t only burn calories, but also we enhance our cardio respiratory fitness. This process involves some several steps. When we breathe, oxygen gets into our lungs and is absorbed into the blood system. The oxygenated blood is then pumped to the left side of the heart via the pulmonary vein. On getting into the heart, the oxygenated blood is pumped to various organs where the oxygen is absorbed and used to generate energy. As blood supplies muscles with oxygen, it also removes carbon dioxide which is a waste product of aerobic respiration. The de-oxygenated blood is then pumped to the lungs for oxygenation; the process repeats itself in a cyclic manner. During vigorous activities like exercising, muscles require more oxygen to satisfy the high levels of energy required.  Exercising makes the heart get used to enduring high oxygen demands and hence, the cardio respiratory rate is enhanced greatly.
