Week 2 | Part 2: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics
I have analyzed the relationship between academic integrity and writing, as well as the relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics. I have also identified strategies I intend to pursue to maintain integrity and ethics of my academic work while a student of the MSN program, as well as my professional work as a nurse throughout my career. I have considered various options for my nursing specialty, including a close look at my selected (or currently preferred) speciality and second-preferred specialty. I have also developed a justification for my selected (or preferred) specialty. Lastly, I have examined one professional organization related to my selected or preferred specialty and considered how I could become a member of this organization.

Step 1: Comparison of Nursing Specialties
Use the space below to write 2-3 paragraphs comparing the nursing specialty you have selected – or the one you prefer if your choice is still under consideration – to your second preference. Identify each specialty and describe the focus and the role that graduates are prepared for. Identify any other differentiators you feel are significant, especially those that helped or may help you reach a decision.
Nursing has different specialties, where the nurses concentrate on a particular area in nursing where they can deliver more specialized care for their patients (Whitehead et al., 2019). The choice of specialty to focus on depends on various factors, for instance, individual nurse preferences, increasing one’s hiring potential, and the quest for a higher salary and better remunerations (Auerbach et al., 2020). My chosen specialty is Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, while my second preferred specialization is Psychiatric mental Health. Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioners primarily focus on providing care to acutely ill adult patients, which refer to adolescents through the adult and advanced ages. Such nurse practitioners can work in various settings, including private and public settings and treatment centers. They are also prepared to practice independently, for instance, ordering and analyzing diagnostic results, prescribing medications, and developing and implementing a full treatment plan for their patients.
Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioners are therefore prepared to manage their patients, primarily adults, fully. They involve making a diagnosis and providing them with treatment without being under the supervision of a physician (Auerbach et al., 2020). In some states, however, there is a partial or total restriction to practice for these nurse practitioners; hence they are still required to work under the supervision of a physician. My second preference is Psychiatric mental Health, which primarily focuses on managing various mental health disorders affecting groups, communities, families, or individuals (Auerbach et al., 2020). Graduates of this specialty are prepared to diagnose and manage various mental health conditions by applying evidence-based psychiatric treatment strategies (Alexander & Schnell, 2019). They are also prepared to offer support and strengthen those with mental health ailments by applying appropriate treatment measures such as psychotherapeutic interventions and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to improve the health outcomes of their patients.
Of note is that both specialties involve extensive education and training, and both have the training to offer mental health services. However, the Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner has more skills in managing mental health issues (Alexander & Schnell, 2019). The Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioners have the upper hand because in addition to being able to manage mental health illnesses, they can as well offer medical services to various groups of individuals, which implies that their scope of practice is not limited, and this contributed to my choice of this specialty.
Step 2: Justification of Nursing Specialty

MSN specialization is critical in enhancing practice and improving one’s potential. I chose MSN specialization for various reasons, but primarily to improve my skills and knowledge to enable me better offer care to my patients. I also need more autonomy in my practice, which can only be achieved through advancing my education and gaining more skills and knowledge as required by the nursing regulations. My focus on Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nursing was based on my interest: to offer care to adults, primarily the largest proportion of individuals seeking care from various facilities. This is despite the inadequate number of physicians, which hinders timely access to care. My reason for choosing this specialization, therefore, was to give me more skills to manage these patients independently. Given the autonomy, I can also practice independently and help address the gap created by the physicians’ shortages, thereby improving access to care.
Step 3: Professional Organizations

The professional organization of choice, which relates to the selected specialty, is the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. The organization has the Acute Care Specialty Practice Group, which brings together all acute care specialty practice nurses, and provides them with a platform to engage, network, and learn, which are essential in progressing the practice in acute care (Kleinpell et al., 2018). To become a member of the organization, I must be a new graduate nurse practitioner in the first year of my career. Before joining the organization, I must also be licensed to practice in the United States. I must also be willing and dedicate my commitment to the organization, as well as understand the principles and values of the organization.
